The Dragons of Postojna Cave

The Dragons of Postojna Cave

Can you guess what the most well known thing in Postojna Cave is? It’s an olm! If you want to see another olm picture click here: https://www.postojnska-jama.eu/assets/Obiscite-nas/Proteusova-jama/Postojna-Cave-Vivarium-Proteus-P-anguinus-1.jpg. An olm is a salamander that looks quite like a dragon. No wonder it’s famous. Olms are blind, but

Ljubljana – Part 3

Ljubljana – Part 3

Ljubljana has an incredible castle and many amazing churches. We could see the castle from our hotel room. We got up to the castle by taking our second funicular. The ride was beautiful and the view of the castle was amazing. It was the first

Ljubljana – Part 2

There is a bird marsh not too far outside Ljubljana. When we arrived, there was a pheasant in the road! I don’t have any photos of it because it was running away from the car! It had a shiny green head and red cheek patches that extended from its cheeks all the way to its beak and had yellow eyes. I didn’t know it was a pheasant until I looked in my European bird book.

In addition to the pheasant, there were other birds at the marsh including corncrakes. I didn’t see one because they are elusive. Although I did hear them. Although they are birds they sound quite like frogs. You can hear the corncrake’s sound by clicking here: http://www.british-birdsongs.uk/corn-crake/.

In addition to the corncrakes and pheasants there were also herons at the marsh. I think they were grey herons because they weren’t quite as tall as the great blue herons in California. There were at least five of them standing in a field.

There were also beautiful butterflies and electric blue dragonflies (plus the annoying flies that bit my dad). Click here to read more about the marsh and see a picture of a corncrake: http://ptice.si/en/nature-conservation-and-research/nature-reserves/iski-morost/.

My dad took the heron pictures and my mom took the others. More of my pictures will be coming in my Ljubljana – Part 3 post.

Ljubljana – Part 1

Ljubljana – Part 1

Ljubljana is a beautiful city with amazing features. Ljubljana is Slovenia’s capital. A river full of fish (and ducks) cuts right through the middle. Riding a boat is a good relaxing way to see the river. The ducks quack as they swim by. Seeing the

Skocjan Caves – Part 2

If you see a fuzzy stalactite, it’s a bat (especially if it squeaks)! Nine types of bats appear in the cave. One is the long winged.   There are no photos allowed in the cave because algae will grow. There is a funicular that goes

Skocjan Cave Part 1

Skocjan Cave in Slovenia is very beautiful. Stalactites and Stalagmites create amazing formations. Stalactites hang from the top and stalagmites come up from the bottom. They grow one millimeter per year. That’s slow! Different colors indicate different minerals. For example, limestone is white. The river that runs through this cave is called the Reka River. Reka translated into English means river. So Reka River means River River! I wonder if people in Slovenia call it Reka Reka.
